But come during the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering each January, and you’ll experience an event that has been called the “cowboy Woodstock.” It’s a one-of-a-kind festival where working ranchers, visiting vaqueros, and those playing cowboy for a week swap stories and songs. The atmosphere alone is worth the trip. The Gathering holds a special place for me—new memories mixed with western-flavored nostalgia. In grade school, I got up on stage at the Western Folklife Center and recited a poem of my own.
