These West Virginia Destinations are Booming with Stunning Fall Foliage – Week of 10/10/24

With cooler temperatures settling in Almost Heaven, now is the time for fall hues to bloom in regions of lower elevation. This is your sign to pack your car, bring your friends and get started on your leaf peeping adventure!

Use our Live Leaf Map to look at fall foliage in real-time and see where all of those color-changing trees are thriving across West Virginia.

Holly River State Park

With more than 8,000 acres of dense forest, Holly River State Park is West Virginia’s second largest state park and boasts several leaf peeping opportunities. You’ll be surrounded by heavily forested mountains – with some reaching more than 2,800 feet in height. Easily extend your stay by renting one of the park’s cozy cabins.

While you’re here, stop on the West Virginia Waterfall Trail at Upper and Lower Falls – nestled within a cove of yellow and orange leaves.

Beartown State Park

Home to a unique system of rock formations and overhang cliffs, Beartown State Park in Greenbrier County makes a stunning backdrop for your #AlmostHeaven selfie. This 110-acre natural area is located on the eastern summit of Droop Mountain. Journey along the half-mile boardwalk to be surrounded by picturesque fall vistas.

Beartown State Park should rank high on your list of spots to go exploring and leaf-peeping this fall.

Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park

Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park is a peaceful destination with a panoramic view from the iconic Droop Mountain Tower. During your visit, enjoy hiking, museums, picnics, camping and leaf peeping. This marks the spot where one of West Virginia’s largest and last important Civil War battles took place, so these vibrant fall trees have stories to tell.

You will also spot an #AlmostHeaven Swing, which is perched just steps away from the lookout tower. You won’t want to miss out on this spectacular backdrop!

Watoga State Park

An official Dark Sky Park, Watoga State Park has a lot to offer day and night. During the fall, this 10,000-acre state park thrives as astonishing fall colors paint the surrounding maple and birch trees. Extend your fall leaf peeping by renting a cozy cabin. The Greenbrier River Trail is easily accessible from Watoga if you’d like to extend your hike or dust off your mountain bike. What’s better than surrounding yourself with fall’s best colors while also escaping light pollution?

Spend your days hiking gold tinted trails and observe some of the most magnificent dark skies on the East Coast at night.

Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad

Hampshire County is expected to peak within the next few weeks, so be sure to book your scenic train ride if you’re coming here for the full experience. From flying bald eagles to falling autumn leaves, Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad has plenty of beauty for you to enjoy this fall. Journey along the South Branch of the Potomac River, and you’ll enter a visually striking gorge known as the Trough. Your camera roll will come to life after you snap a few photos of this scenic region of West Virginia.

Cass Scenic Railroad

Cass has always had that old-time charm to it thanks to its rich locomotive history. Enjoy even more fall views aboard Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. Learn about a time when steam-driven locomotives were a part of everyday life as you travel up a mountain, revealing a kaleidoscope of fall colors. Also browse the company store and museum to learn even more about the town’s heritage. Be sure to bring a light jacket and enjoy soaking in the fall-colored vistas at higher elevation.

Wardensville

Wardensville is more than just a small town in the Potomac Highlands. This mountain town is filled with craft vendors, artisan gifts, food, games, a parade and more. Plan a trip here this weekend to attend the annual Fall Festival, which is the perfect way to celebrate the beginning of the fall season.

If you get hungry, you’ll be delighted to learn that Wardensville is foodie heaven as the dining scene earned recognition from travel experts at Travel + Leisure. Head to Lost River Brewing Company for a craft beer or get a taste of American cuisine with seasonal, farm-picked and organic ingredients at Mack’s Bingo Kitchen.
