Review: Catgill Farm Glamping, Bolton Abbey, UK

The story of Catgill is one of profound diversification and family legacy. Since 2014, husband-and-wife team Oliver and Cat Barker, guided by the wisdom of Oliver’s grandfather Ken, have breathed new life into a 60-year-old North Yorkshire dairy farm whilst also raising a family. The humble beginnings of a simple camping field within the Bolton Abbey estate have flourished to such an extent that the grounds now boast a series of high-end glamping pods. This isn’t really camping – it’s more like staying in your own private boutique lodge whilst still being at one with nature. The welcome At the entrance to Catgill Farm is a pair of vintage milk churns sitting on a stand that’s built into the farm’s perimeter wall. Beside them is a sign that pays homage to Ken Barker, the man who worked the land long before ‘glamping’ had even joined the local lexicon (interesting fact – the word didn’t actually make the Oxford English Dictionary until as recently as 2016). A nearby sign invites you to imagine the early mornings and sheer grit required to move milk from udder to community – a grounding reminder that, while you might be there to relax, it’s a

Review: Kasbah d’Eau, Sidi Kaouki, Morocco

“Et voila!” Announces our taxi driver, with justification, as we pull into the magnificent Kasbah d’Eau. A beach castle perched high above Morocco’s Atlantic coastline booked for our winter escape by Fleewinter. Fleewinter has put together our personalised programme of flight, transfer and hotel. Recommending an itinerary that will show us an authentic Morocco, far from madding crowds, infuriating rug sellers and belching mopeds.  Created from local sandstone, cooling in summer, warming in winter, Kasbah d’Eau, is a boutique hotel of just 17 rooms and suites, with art house design. A calm double-height central atrium pulls in the light, illuminating vivid contemporary abstract art that contrasts with solidly traditional dark furniture. Surf schools outnumber shops in a village with a population of around 5,000. Here Africa disappears in mists and mirages into Atlantic rollers. Fleewinter’s Morocco experts know this land well, recommending unique experiences: horse-riding on the beach, taking a camel ride to an argan-oil farm, a hamman, having lunch with a Berber family, a Moroccan cookery lesson and yoga. The welcome If ever there is a boutique airport it is Essaouira Mogador where we’ve passed through immigration, collected our luggage and picked up some Moroccan Dirham in less than

Coffee, cake and pugs: The CuppaPug Cafe London

My daughter has always loved pugs so it seemed only right that I take her to the CuppaPug Cafe London.  Based in east London, this cosy cafe is a wonderful experience where you can hang out with a small herd of snorting, snuffling pugs. It’s the perfect day out for pug-lovers, dog lovers or if you simply want to escape from the stresses of daily life. I can promise you that nothing will put a smile on your face faster than a grumble of curious pugs.  If you are thinking about visiting the CuppaPug Cafe London then here’s what to expect.  CuppaPug Cafe London CuppaPug originally opened in 2022 in Hagerston but has since moved to a bigger location in Hackney. One of a handful of dog cafes in London, the cafe was founded by Matt Pieterse and Aaron Carey with the aim to create a safe and nurturing community around pugs while also spreading pug joy. They work with three charity partners and £1 from every booking goes towards helping rescue and re-home abandoned pugs through their dedicated initiative CuppaPug Rescue.  The cafe actively seeks out vulnerable pugs and provide them a welcoming home for as long as is

New Zealand’s Southern Lakes: A luxury playground worth slowing down for

If you have ever looked at a map of the South Island and wondered where the scenery turns from beautiful to completely unreal, the answer is the Southern Lakes. Queenstown might be the draw card that brings you to the Southern Lakes, but let it also be the launchpad for discovering what the locals commonly refer to as paradise: the landscape and lifestyle beyond.  Stretching across western Southland, Central Otago and up into the Mackenzie Basin, this region is New Zealand’s most spectacular alpine playground. Think vast wilderness, glacial lakes, and mountains that look like they were designed for postcards, but somehow feel even better in person. It is also a place where raw natural beauty meets genuinely world-class hospitality, which is why so many discerning travellers return again and again. What makes the Southern Lakes so special? The Southern Lakes region is built around some of New Zealand’s most iconic landscapes. It is home to three of the country’s largest lakes, including its deepest, and dramatic U-shaped valleys carved by ancient glaciers. UNESCO World Heritage protected wilderness sits right alongside refined, high-end experiences and some discretely placed and respectfully designed private villas and residences. At its heart are three

London’s brilliant Museum of Brands in Notting Hill

London is well-known for its many museums but there’s one museum that isn’t quite as famous as it should be. The Museum of Brands is a brilliant step back in time looking at the brands and companies that have helped to shape and mould life in the United Kingdom. Disclosure: I was a gust of the Museum of Brands for the purpose of this review. For more information, please see my disclosure policy. London’s Museum of Brands The London Museum of Brands tracks the history of consumer culture from Victorian times through to the present day and is a fascinating look at how interests, fashions and fads have changed over the years. The museum was started not as you might think by a company looking to follow the history of their branding through the ages but rather by a childhood collection. Robert Opie came from a family of collectors and one day decided to save a packet of Munchies from a vending machine in Inverness, Scotland. From one packet of chocolate his collection grew to include all manner of items. By 1975 he had enough material to hold his own exhibition, The Pack Age, at the Victoria & Albert Museum.
