Whether you want to try a new hobby or are a seasoned disc golfer, West Virginia is home to an abundance of courses that will allow you to get competitive in the great outdoors. We’ve done the hard part for you and compiled this list of some of the greatest spots to frolf in Almost Heaven.
1. The Black Course
This slightly hilly course in Moundsville was designed by Johnny Sias, a West Virginia native and Professional Disc Golf Association Hall of Fame inductee. Undertake all 18 holes at The Black Course, and you’ll cover about 9,114 feet—ensuring you’ll hit your daily step goal. Expect some long drives and lots of open air in a beautiful, peaceful setting.
2. Barboursville City Park Disc Golf Course
This course in Barboursville, WV, is shorter than The Black Course, clocking in at just over 5,300 feet in length for 18 holes. The course is in the middle of a city park of the same name, that offers other recreational activities. To get to the course, park in the parking lot at Lake William and you’ll find the first tee just to the right beyond Shelter 8.
3. Nellie’s
Nellie’s golf course is a hidden gem located in the small town of Hinton. The course is named after Nellie Bly, the famous journalist that traveled the world in 72 days. This is a par 54, 18-hole course that spans over 5,000 feet. It offers players a mix of open fairways and woody enclosures, as well as a variety of elevations. This course is considered one of the more challenging courses in West Virginia, requiring players to have a good mix of accuracy and power.
4. The Woodshed
A challenging and picturesque course is what you will find at The Woodshed in Paw Paw. Featuring a par 61, 18-hole layout spread across 6,600 feet. A heavily wooded layout among rolling hills awaits your adventure. While playing this course, golfers must avoid a multitude of obstacles, including trees, bushes, creeks and many blind spots, but also take in the scenic views this course provides.
5. Greenbrier State Forest Disc Golf Course
Along Hart’s Run Road in Caldwell is Greenbrier State Forest, where you can find one of the best disc golf courses in the state. The course is a full 18 holes that cover 5,434 feet. The first 9 are largely open, while the back 9 are more enclosed in the forest, which makes for an unique challenge and contrast in scenery.
6. Valley Park
This course is known for its beautiful scenery, with many holes offering views of the surrounding mountainous terrain throughout Valley Park. With an 18-hole, cart-friendly course with turf tee pads, it’s easy to see why this is a family favorite.
7. Orange Crush
Orange Crush in Fairmont is an 18-hole course designed by Phil Burton and Joshua Smith that opened in 2007. Expect a workout when you undertake this winding course, since it contains many elevation changes, is heavily wooded and has varying types of terrain. For a relaxing way to wind down after hitting the course, visit the stunning Valley Falls State Park, also in Fairmont.
8. Glenwood Park
Surrounding the 55-acre lake in the middle of Glenwood Recreational Park and 4-H Camp is the perfect course for beginners to practice their skills. However, experienced players will still find the course fun and challenging with its well-designed layout. The course offers a pair of tee pads allowing golfers to choose their difficulty level.
9. Pipestem State Park
Across the beautiful landscape of Pipestem Resort State Park you can enjoy an 18-hole course. The course features concrete tee pads, making it an ideal location for golfers of any age or skill level. A hilly open layout with minimal trees guarantees a breezy experience.
10. Rotary Park (Red)
In the mountains overlooking the nearby Ohio River in Huntington is where you can this par 54 and 18 hole course. Make sure you’re prepared for the great elevation changes and over 5,000 feet this course covers. This is a must-visit destination for any golfers looking for a testing but fun course.
11. Cedar Lakes Disc Golf
Built around the stunning Cedar Lakes in Ripley, the Cedar Lakes Conference Center disc golf course has much to offer. Not only do they provide a well-maintained 24-hole layout with concrete and gravel tee pads but there is also a playground and an amazing recreational center all within walking distance.
12. Dorsey’s Knob Disk Golf Course
Dorsey’s Knob Disc Golf Course in the college town of Morgantown is a popular spot with younger crowds. The course is hilly and grassy, which can make spotting your disk in the summer months a bit of a challenge, but everything else about the park gets rave reviews. You’ll find it along the eastern edge of Dorsey’s Knob Park off of Grafton Road. Dorsey’s Knob is a 71-acre park that overlooks the Monongahela River, so be sure to take in the beautiful scenery while enjoying the course.
13. Wood County Veterans Memorial Park
Located in Parkersburg this course has many unique shots to challenge players. This course spans over 5,000 feet and has concrete tee pads for players to take advantage of. After a long time of great disc play check out the Parkersburg Art Center for a look at its six separate galleries.
14. Lost River State Park
Lost River State Park has much to offer and a brand new disc golf course is just one thing to enjoy here. Opening in 2020, this course provides players with stunning views of the Appalachian mountains.
15. Redeemer
Have a big day to fill? Don’t worry, Redeemer, located in Charleston right off US-119, has your back. Equipped with 54 different free holes, this course is sure to provide a full day of adventure. Also offering free discs rentals, new players have a great chance to learn more about the sport and hone their craft.
16. WVU Jackson’s Mill Disc Golf Course
WVU’s Jackson’s Mill Disc Golf Course near Weston is designed to provide fun and recreation alongside education. The course teaches visitors about the historic Jackson’s Mill. The mixed course blends open and wooded elements and meanders throughout the entire campus, beginning and ending at the general store. With all but 4 holes clocking in at less than 300 feet, the course is great for golfers of all skill levels.
17. Fairy Diddle Disc Golf Course
In the mountains of Almost Heaven, at the Snowshoe Resort lies the uniquely placed Fairy Diddle Disc Golf Course. Named after the near-mythic West Virginia rodent, this course near Dunmore is complete with a full 18-holes. Enjoy the rugged mountain terrain and sweeping landscapes surrounding this rural course.
18. Poor House Farm
Poor House Farm provides players with an amazing course, beautiful countryside and a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Located nearby is the city of Martinsburg, where you can spend time in local shops and visit the farmers market here.
19. Princeton City Park
Surrounded by an abundance of beautiful greenery, this course makes for a perfect way to spend an afternoon in the sun at Princeton City Park. This course has a total of 24 holes with a mix of concrete and turf tee pads. Looking for some friendly competition? Tournaments are scheduled throughout the year for all ages.
20. Coonskin Park Disc Golf Course
The Coonskin Park Disc Golf Course in Charleston is a great scenic course if you’re just starting out. The course has wooded elements but is largely open, which makes it easier for beginners to get the hang of it. The majority of the holes are under 300 feet, and the course winds through the forest in the park and is easily followed. Nearby is the Coonskin Grotto, if you’re looking to add to your WV Waterfall Trail list.
