6 Ways to Celebrate West Virginia Day
Since West Virginia was declared a state on June 20th, 1863, the Mountain State has only become more beautiful with age. West Virginians and West Virginia lovers alike look forward to celebrating Almost Heaven’s birthday with the outdoors in mind. On the weekend leading up to West Virginia’s birthday, go offline and get outside for an uninterrupted bond with Almost Heaven. Everyone would love to see how you explored #AlmostHeaven. Here’s to another 160 years and counting.
1. Hike the Hills
One of the many benefits of visiting West Virginia is the plethora of hiking trails to explore. Find your stride at Pipestem State Park’s 15 hiking trails, including Canyon Rim Trail, Long Branch Trail and others ranging in level of difficulty. To take a step back in time, explore a section of the 136-mile loop at George Washington Heritage Trail in West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle. The route passes over 40 colonial, Civil War and abolition sites, adding some historical insight to your birthday celebration. For true view-seekers, let the breathtaking view from the Coopers Rock State Forest overlook blow out the candles.
2. Capture the Cascades
Chasing waterfalls is easier than ever by using your virtual passport for the West Virginia Waterfall Trail. Explore many of the state’s most beautiful waterfalls like Cathedral Falls, Blackwater Falls, Big Branch Falls, Pipestem Falls and so many more to get your heart pumping for stunning views. These cascades also make great spots for picnics and scenic hikes.
Adventurer Tip: To honor West Virginia Day, try to only use your device to check in at the waterfalls and grab photos and videos to be shared on your social media on June 20th.
3. Out on the Water
Almost Heaven is rich with rivers and lakes to get you going with the flow. If you’re an avid kayaker, paddler or canoer, hop on the Tygart River along the Monongahela National Forest for a relaxing float. For whitewater adventures on the New River, look to outfitters such as ACE Adventure Resort or Adventure on the Gorge to enjoy traversing more than 25 Class II-IV rapids.
4. Explore on Two Wheels
From mountain biking to rail trails, Almost Heaven has a path waiting for you to explore. Bike trails at the Arrowhead Bike Farm are located less than four miles away from Fayetteville, making this the ideal spot to rent or ride your own bike. In the Metro Valley, Kanawha State Forest is serene yet within close proximity to the capital city of Charleston. Access the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Towpath from Harpers Ferry or Shepherdstown for a more historic ride.
Adventurer Tip: If you are a first-time rider, visit the local gear shop for trail guidance and gear rental options for your ride.
5. Appalachian Eats
You will never be short of great dining options in Almost Heaven. If you’re in the Metro Valley, check out The Pitch Sports Bar & Grill or Recovery Sports Grill for an Appalachian twist on American food. Vagabond Kitchen in Wheeling has many unique gourmet dishes to satisfy your cravings. Firecreek BBQ & Steaks is another great option for fueling up after exploring along the Gauley River.
6. Camp in the Great Outdoors
After a day filled with adventure, nothing sounds better than resting your head with the sounds of nature surrounding you. Blackwater Falls State Park is one of the state’s most beautiful spots to set up camp, among the looming pines. For more than 6,000 acres of serenity, book a site at Cacapon Resort State Park and get cozy in a tent with its own wooden platform, solar shower, pop-up tent for extra guests and more amenities. Stay up late to peak at some of the darkest skies in the United States.
Bonus: Have a Pepperoni Roll or Two
While West Virginia is known for its recreational activities, nothing is more West Virginian than enjoying a pepperoni roll to break up your weekend full of adventure. Aside from being a tasty snack, the pepperoni roll was key to feeding coal miners while they were on the clock during the first half of the 20th century.
Country Club Bakery in Fairmont is a local favorite for sourcing some of Almost Heaven’s most authentic pepperoni rolls. You can also find these at just about any local festival. If you’re feeling like a local yourself, you can easily make your own at home with inspiration from one of our official West Virginia Chef Ambassadors. Your West Virginia birthday celebration will be complete after trying one of these tasty favorites!
