Aseana City Builds a Healthier Community Through Walkable Spaces

Parañaque City, Philippines – In the busy environment of a large city like Metro Manila, many commuters face daily difficulties when walking or using public transportation. Data from the local civil society group Move As One Coalition shows that 94% of Filipinos either walk or depend on public transit, while only 6% drive their own cars.

Further data from the said organization shows Filipinos spend around 77.5% of their travel time walking, yet only 5% of the roads are considered safe for pedestrians. Additionally, a survey conducted by Social Weather Stations (SWS) found that 44% of non-home-based Filipino workers walk to work, making it the most common way to commute.

Despite these numbers, roads are still made for cars instead of people. Most investments from both the government and some private sectors tend to go toward easing traffic congestion for private vehicles rather than improving walkways and mass transport.

While many urban areas continue to prioritize cars over people, Aseana City in the south of Metro Manila offers a refreshing contrast. Developed by D.M. Wenceslao Associates Inc. (PSE: DMW), this thriving business district is designed with walkability on the top of mind. The estate is being shaped into a “15-minute City”– a vision where workplaces, shops, and other essential services are all within walking distance.

“At Aseana City, we believe that a progressive city that cares for its people puts them at the center of its design. By designing and building a walkable city, we’re not just creating convenience, we also want people to have a more active, healthier and more connected life.” said Buds Wenceslao, Chief Executive Officer, DMWAI.

Aseana City promotes wellness through fitness-friendly spaces designed for both workers and visitors. With wide, shaded walkways, bike lanes, open parks, and recreational zones, the city encourages people to stay active throughout the day. These features make it convenient for individuals to walk to dining and retail establishments, jog before or after work, or simply enjoy a stroll, fostering a healthier lifestyle within the community.

DMWAI is dedicated to investing in public infrastructure that enhances community well-being beyond just urban planning. Thoughtfully designed elements, such as green open spaces and integrated transport hubs, contribute to a more livable environment. These investments align with DMWAI’s commitment to a low-carbon lifestyle by reducing car dependency, lowering emissions, and fostering a culture where sustainable choices are seamlessly integrated into everyday life.

With more walkable spaces, Filipinos can advance towards safer, healthier, and more connected communities.
