Cool Off This Labor Day Weekend With Some Flatwater Paddling At These 5 Lakes

August 11, 2023

Labor Day weekend is soon approaching and there’s no better place to escape for the long weekend than Almost Heaven. Soak up the last bit of summertime the season has to offer and cool off on these flatwater paddleboarding trails.

Summersville Lake

Find a paddleboarding oasis awaiting you on the pristine waters of Summersville Lake, the home of West Virginia’s newest state park! Lodging and additional outdoor recreation opportunities will soon be added to the 177 acres of northern shoreline, but the property is now officially open and operating as the state’s 36th park. Iconically known for its clear water and sandstone cliff sides, this lake is the largest in West Virginia and provides a relaxing experience for both seasoned paddleboarders and first-timers alike.

Cheat Lake

When in the heart of Mountaineer Country, don’t miss taking a paddle on the majestic Cheat Lake. This 13-mile-long body of water is a slice of Almost Heaven for water sports of all kinds. Start your morning off with solitude by taking part in a stand-up paddle board yoga session on the shore.

Bluestone Lake

Discover Bluestone State Park tucked in the southern shores of West Virginia, another lovely place to retreat for Labor Day. Spend your days paddling amid jaw-dropping views and your nights in a cozy cabin located right on site. Other lake activities include boating, fishing and swimming. Take a break from the water and explore the park’s many hiking trails.

Spruce Knob Lake

Travel to the Mountain State’s highest point for views like you’ve never seen before. This recreational area offers hiking and biking trails, picnic areas as well as a lake and campground. Spruce Knob Lake is a 23-acre reservoir nestled within the Monongahela National Forest, a slow-flowing water channel idea for paddleboarding. End your day on the water with a climb up the observation tower to take in the sunset from 5,000 feet high.

Hawk’s Nest Lake

Peace for paddleboarding can be found at the serene lake formed below the lodge at Hawk’s Nest State Park. Although the narrow canyon and rushing water found right above the lake creates one of the most challenging whitewater waterways in the nation, this spot is a hidden gem of calm. Enjoy the holiday weekend with a stay at the lodge, on-site dining options and find the New River Gorge Bridge only a 15 minute drive away.
