Feeling Cooped up? Give Snowshoeing a Go at These Scenic West Virginia Spots
Nothing is cozier than relaxing in a warm cabin all winter long in Almost Heaven, but it’s always refreshing to fill your lungs with fresh air. There is no better way to experience the low West Virginia temperatures than strapping on some snowshoes and hitting the trails!
This winter, break up your time indoors and give snowshoeing a try on these scenic hiking trails in West Virginia.
What is Snowshoeing?
Think of snowshoeing as winter hiking — except with the proper gear. This activity involves walking over snow using specialized footwear that features a wide frame to distribute the person’s weight over a larger area. This design prevents an explorer’s foot from sinking into the snow and makes you feel like you’re “floating” on the surface. Snowshoers often use trekking poles for added stability as they glide along the trail.
Snowshoeing is a great full-body workout if you enjoy being on the move. You’ll likely break a sweat despite being bundled up like you’re about to go skiing!
Pick a Destination
As the third-most forested state in the country, West Virginia makes getting lost in the peaceful wilderness easy this winter. Pick an area that works with your snowshoe experience level.
White Grass Ski Touring Center
Snowshoeing in and around the mountains of the Canaan Valley is the perfect way to begin your trek through Almost Heaven. Make your way to the White Grass Ski Touring Center, where 25-30 km of groomed trails await! Book a guided tour or lesson to learn the ropes before you explore all that this center has to offer. With a gear shop and cafe, everything you need for your day in the snow will be at your fingertips. Easily extend your snowshoeing quest with a stay at the Canaan Valley Resort State Park Lodge or rent a cozy cabin.
Snowshoe Mountain
With 11,000 acres of snowy slopes or nearly 17 square miles of unspoiled wilderness, Snowshoe Mountain lives up to its name. Continue dashing through the snow on the ski slopes, hop on a snow tube, ride a snowmobile ride through the backcountry or enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride through softly falling snow. After a long day in the snow, explore the mountaintop village filled with many options for lodging, dining, shopping and entertainment. Snowshoe’s heated Split Rock Pools lets you splash around outdoors, even on the coldest winter day.
Twin Falls Resort State Park
Head to the beautiful Twin Falls Resort State Park and strap on your snowshoes at Falls Trail. This trail leads to Marsh Fork Falls and winds past the 20-foot-high Black Fork Falls on the West Virginia Waterfall Trail. During the season, snow runoff increases water flow and beautiful icicles form near the falls in freezing weather. If you enjoy majestic waterfalls and trekking through the snow, you’ll love exploring this region. Extend your adventure for another epic snowshoeing day at the resort’s 47-room lodge.
There are plenty of more wintery trails to explore this season. Request our free West Virginia Vacation Guide to find more snowshoeing inspiration!
