The anti-itinerary safari

For decades, all-inclusive safaris have followed the same schedule. Pre-dawn wake-up calls. Game drives that leave on time whether you’re ready or not. Structured mealtimes. Planned downtime. Communal meals. It’s a structure most accept as part of the deal. But what if that’s not the way a safari is meant to be enjoyed? As a born and bred South African, the safari holiday isn’t once-in-a-lifetime for me. It’s something of a routine. An annual, or even more frequent, event. And to be honest I’d never really questioned its structure. But during a recent stay at an ultra-luxury private villa in South Africa’s Madikwe Game Reserve, I experienced something that felt fundamentally different from any safari I’d done before. It wasn’t just more exclusive or more indulgent, it was freer. Unscripted. Almost deliberately anti-safari in the way it dismantled everything I’d come to expect. A safari without a schedule Sure, at some of South Africa’s biggest game reserves, you can self-drive, self-cater and set your own safari schedule. But if you’re after the trimmings that the quintessential all-inclusive safari offers then you’re pretty much bound by a daily schedule that isn’t your own. In the past it was ideal, expected even,

Award devaluation: What you need to know about Virgin Atlantic Flying Club’s fee changes

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club’s pesky surcharges are back in the news — and not in a good way. After introducing dynamic award pricing in late 2024, the program slashed prices and fees on some award tickets. This resulted in business-class fares to Europe for as low as 29,000 points and roughly $250 in fees. In fact, one TPG staffer and loyal Virgin Atlantic flyer thought most of the changes were for the better. But those deals were short-lived, as the carrier’s fees have now spiked. Here’s everything you need to know about Virgin Atlantic’s latest devaluation. ZACH GRIFF/THE POINTS GUY Devaluation details Since Virgin Atlantic’s switch to dynamic pricing, award fees have varied by route, date and fare class. You could expect to pay roughly $250 on a business-class flight to Europe during low-demand dates — a steal compared to the $1,000-plus rates that used to be commonplace. Now, Virgin Atlantic is charging up to $586 one-way for business-class redemptions from the U.S. to the U.K., including to Heathrow Airport (LHR) and Manchester Airport (MAN) — more than doubling those fees overnight. Thrifty Traveler first broke this news. VIRGIN ATLANTIC Similarly, one-way fees from the U.S. to the U.K. have

Park Hyatt Johannesburg is opening July 1 — and you can book it from 21,000 points

The brand-new Park Hyatt Johannesburg has moved up when it will start welcoming guests by a month, with its new opening date now just around the corner.  The highly anticipated property, a conversion of The Winston Hotel in the city’s popular Rosebank area, is accepting reservations for stays starting July 1, according to the hotel’s website. The intimate space will be the world’s smallest Park Hyatt, general manager Mitch Gemmell told TPG. It’ll feature just 31 rooms and suites. “Every element — including the curated guest experiences, dining, rooms [and] suites — has been thoughtfully considered to create an intimate and sophisticated retreat in the heart of Rosebank,” Gemmell said. When it opens in July, rooms at the Park Hyatt Johannesburg will offer luxurious, round soaking tubs; modern marble and glass touches; and plush seating options. They will also feature private terraces overlooking the hotel’s lush gardens. The property will have several suites, including a wellness suite with special relaxation spaces and rejuvenating amenities. Outside, guests will have year-round access to the heated courtyard pool. Dining promises to be a distinct experience, thanks to a trio of options. The Dining Room will showcase open-flame cooking, while The Terrace will allow
