The anti-itinerary safari

For decades, all-inclusive safaris have followed the same schedule. Pre-dawn wake-up calls. Game drives that leave on time whether you’re ready or not. Structured mealtimes. Planned downtime. Communal meals. It’s a structure most accept as part of the deal. But what if that’s not the way a safari is meant to be enjoyed? As a born and bred South African, the safari holiday isn’t once-in-a-lifetime for me. It’s something of a routine. An annual, or even more frequent, event. And to be honest I’d never really questioned its structure. But during a recent stay at an ultra-luxury private villa in South Africa’s Madikwe Game Reserve, I experienced something that felt fundamentally different from any safari I’d done before. It wasn’t just more exclusive or more indulgent, it was freer. Unscripted. Almost deliberately anti-safari in the way it dismantled everything I’d come to expect. A safari without a schedule Sure, at some of South Africa’s biggest game reserves, you can self-drive, self-cater and set your own safari schedule. But if you’re after the trimmings that the quintessential all-inclusive safari offers then you’re pretty much bound by a daily schedule that isn’t your own. In the past it was ideal, expected even,

American Airlines adds 2 brand-new destinations in 7-route expansion

American Airlines is starting to make winter plans with seven new routes, including two new destinations. American’s two new destinations are Santa Maria Airport (SMX) on California’s Central Coast and Friedman Memorial Airport (SUN) in Sun Valley, Idaho. From Sun Valley, the carrier will add service to its hubs at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX). Santa Maria will get one nonstop route — a link to American’s Phoenix hub. Beyond those, American is adding four other new routes that will bolster its service at Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) in Fort Myers, Florida; Missoula Montana Airport (MSO); and Santa Fe Regional Airport (SAF) in New Mexico. Bargain hunting: When is the best time to book flights for the cheapest airfare? Here are the details of American’s new routes: Fort Myers to Phoenix: Daily on a Boeing 737 from Nov. 20 through Dec. 3, and from Dec. 18 through Jan. 6, 2026. Missoula to Chicago: Daily on an Embraer E175 from Dec. 18 (American currently flies from Missoula to Chicago seasonally during the summer). Santa Fe to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX): Daily on a Bombardier CRJ700 from Oct. 6. Santa Fe to Chicago:

The complete guide to Chase Sapphire airport lounges — and how to get access

Editor’s note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information and offers. Credit card issuers compete on many fronts, but one area that has been heating up the most is airport lounges. Chase is making strides in this area with their Chase Sapphire Lounges by The Club. To get access, you’ll need the right credit card. Currently, eight Chase lounges are open, with confirmed plans for two more. Although American Express remains the undisputed heavyweight in this arena with its Global Lounge Collection, Capital One has also made a foray into the field with its Capital One airport lounges. With more lounges opening all the time, it’s important to keep up with what your options are at any airport you transit through. Here’s the latest on the current and future Sapphire Lounges, plus what to expect and how to access them. How to preview Amazon Prime Day deals You can preview deals on the Amazon website or the app and then enable push notifications to alert you when the Prime Day sale starts. Repricing flights: What you need to know about canceling trips when you find a cheaper fare

Although coronavirus pandemic-era travel restrictions may be well behind us, one thing remains from those times: Flight bookings are generally more flexible. Most major U.S. airlines still let you rebook award and revenue tickets if the price drops or plans change. In the case of a price drop, you can rebook your flights to the new lower fare and pocket the difference. While this practice sticks at American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and other carriers, there’s one noteworthy exception: Southwest Airlines. Before the pandemic, Southwest was one of the only airlines that let customers rebook their flights for free in any fare class, even if they booked the cheapest Wanna Get Away fare. However, this has become more complicated since the airline replaced Wanna Get Away fares with Basic fares. This new fare class restricts changing or canceling its cheapest flights, and flight credits now expire after six months. Here, we’ll discuss what you need to know about rebooking flights when the price drops with major U.S. airlines, including an in-depth look at Southwest’s new policies. Rebooking flights when the price drops ANDREW KUNESH/THE POINTS GUY Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue and United Airlines allow
