Elko, in northeastern Nevada, is cowboy country any time of year. But come during the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering each January, and you’ll experience an event that has been called the “cowboy Woodstock.” It’s a one-of-a-kind festival where working ranchers, visiting vaqueros, and those playing cowboy for a week swap stories and songs. The atmosphere alone is worth the trip. The Gathering holds a special place for me—new memories mixed with western-flavored nostalgia. In grade school, I got up on stage at the Western Folklife Center and recited a poem of my own. While visual arts took me down another path, I still love words and poetry, and thought where better to bring them all together than the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering.
