U.S. government policies imprisoned 125,000 people of Japanese ancestry solely based on race. As a child, Sally Sudo was imprisoned for 3-1/2 years, after President Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066, at the Puyallup Assembly Center in Washington state and then on to the Minidoka concentration camp in Idaho. In August 1945, her family relocated to Minneapolis, MN, where her brother was stationed at Fort Snelling in the Military Intelligence Service Language School. Since retiring from teaching in the Minneapolis Public Schools, Sally Sudo has devoted her life to educating the public about injustices suffered by Americans of Japanese ancestry during WWII, so history will not repeat itself. This post was originally published on this siteIron Riders Bicycle Challenge Anonymous (not verified) Tue, 08/06/2024 – 13:25 Join Melanin IN Motion and the Cultural Wellness Center at Historic Fort Snelling for an Iron Riders bicycle challenge. Learn about the Twenty-Fifth Infantry, an African American regiment stationed at Fort Snelling (1882-1888), and their 1,900-mile bicycle expedition from Fort Missoula to St. Louis, Missouri (1897). The bicycle tour will start and end at Historic Fort Snelling and make numerous stops in Minneapolis and St. Paul to hear stories about the early Black leaders of Minnesota, some of whom were connected with the 25th Infantry. The bicycle ride will start adjacent to the parking lot and end with live music and a community meal in the Klas Overlook. Come for the ride (62 mile challenge) departing at 9:00, the tour (35 miles at a conversational pace) departing at 11:00, or join us for the post-ride celebration at 3:00.
