This totals to more to more than 300 miles of trails. Indian Ridge One of the largest continuous areas of the Hatfield-McCoy Trails network along with Pocahontas, Pinnacle Creek and Warrior trail systems and connectors. Located near Ashland in McDowell County, the Indian Ridge Trail System offers a nice variety of trails of all difficulty levels. This trail system offers community access to the ATV-friendly towns of Northfork and Keystone. Nearby communities offer gas, food and lodging. The History The Hatfield-McCoy Trail System gets its name from the region in Southern West Virginia where most of the world-famous Hatfield-McCoy feuding happened. This feud took place along the Tug Fork of the Big Sandy River from 1863 to 1891 and was between the Hatfield family from West Virginia and the McCoy family from Kentucky. Hatfield-McCoy Mountains are rich in coal mining and were one of the world’s busiest coal mining regions in the early 1900’s and is now deemed part of the National Coal Heritage Area. The town of Bramwell introduces history lovers to the National Coal Heritage Area Interpretive Center, a museum that showcases relics and exhibits of West Virginia’s coal history.
