This post was originally published on this siteMendota After Hours: The Montreal Fur Trade and George Bonga of 1837 Anonymous (not verified) Sat, 03/30/2024 – 10:25 Join the Dakota County Historical Society and the Sibley Historic Site for October’s Mendota After Hours: “The Montreal Fur Trade and George Bonga of 1837”  George Bonga was a mixed race Black and Ojibwe fur trader and translator who was born in what would become Minnesota to his black father, Pierre Bonga, and his Ojibwe mother. He was an important link between multiple cultures for the Fur Trade. Joel Brown will present an overview of the Montreal Fur Trade, roughly between 1650 and 1850 and the pertinent history of George and Pierra Bonga as it related to the Caribbean and the Northwest Territory. A Cultural history interpreter since 1996, Joel Brown’s primary focus is the US Army Air Corps and US Army Air Forces of World War II. As featured on multiple A & E TV documentaries an the History Channel’s “Crime Story” TV program, Maccabee draws his stories from more than 100,000 pages of long-secret FBI and police files and more than 250 interviews with police, crime victims and family members of the gangsters themselves. Paul Macabee is a Saint Paul crime historian and the author of John Dillinger Slept Here: A Crooks’ Tour of Crime and Corruption in Saint Paul. While digging he and his wife began to notice the beauty in the multi-colored stones. Using his team of horses, the excavation grew to what is now Itasca Rock Garden. The site was recently renovated by the Kohler Foundation with more than $500,000 being put into the house, structures and gardens.
