Is Iceland safe to drive yourself?

The car rental counter at Keflavík Airport is always busy. Visitors collect their keys, load up on insurance options they half-understand, and drive into a landscape that looks, from the terminal window, like it should be easy. Wide roads, no traffic, open sky. Forty minutes later, somewhere on a coastal highway, the wind picks up. Not a gentle breeze — a sideways force that pushes the car half a lane over. The weather app still says partly cloudy. The sky disagrees. And somewhere ahead, a single-lane bridge appears with no warning, and another car is already on it. This is Iceland. It is absolutely safe to drive — but it is nothing like driving anywhere else you have been. The honest answer: Yes, but… Let’s get this out of the way: Iceland is not a dangerous country to drive in. The roads are well-maintained, the infrastructure is modern, crime is virtually nonexistent, and Icelanders are calm, courteous drivers. If you have experience driving in varied conditions and you do your homework, self-driving is perfectly viable. But Iceland’s challenges have nothing to do with the roads and everything to do with what happens above and around them. The weather is the

Guide to visiting Xunantunich Maya Ruins in Belize: Its history, what to see, and tips!

This post was originally published on this siteNo trip to Belize would be complete without visiting a Mayan ruin (or two), and one of the most famous of all is Xunantunich, also spelled Xunan Tunich. Nestled near the Guatemala border in Western Belize, Xunantunich (pronounced Shoo-nan-too-nitch) is one of the most accessible and fascinating Mayan ruins in the country, and is famous for having well-preserved stucco pyramids. We toured Xunantunich with the incredible Marvelous Marvin, our guide through Hidden Valley Wilderness Lodge, where we stayed as guests for three nights. They offer off-site excursions, and since we embrace local educational experiences, we enthusiastically said yes to this tour (hosted).  Marvin was marvelous at giving us a deep dive into Mayan cosmology, ancient medicine, and philosophical insight that still has us reflecting. In this guide, we share what we learned from our experience, what makes Xunantunich special — and why you should add it to your Belize itinerary. .stk-995e8da {background-color:#3da9b80d !important;}.stk-995e8da:before{background-color:#3da9b80d !important;} Address: Xunantunich Access Rd, San Jose Succotz, Belize Opening Hours: 8am-5pm daily How long do you need at Xunantunich: 2-4 hours Best known for: the site’s largest temple, “El Castillo” Tour guide: highly recommended. Cruise Croatia’s small ship adventure on board My Wish review

Cruise Croatia is a cruise unlike so many others. Instead of sailing through the night and arriving at a new port each breakfast time, you sail away as the sun comes up. And instead of spending the day somewhere, the day comes to you. First, a calm, generally deserted spot… a cove, a bay, maybe a hint of beach. Rugged, hilly backdrops on one side, rippling blue waters stretching away on the other towards another island or three. Croatia is reckoned to have more than 1,000 islands and islets on a mainland coastline of little over 1,100 miles, so although this is a sea cruise, you’re never out of sight of land – in fact, you can usually see some in every direction. There’s a swimming stop each morning, followed by a three-course lunch on board, generally before arriving at a harbour town ready for a guided walk. Sometimes there’s a little beach for a late afternoon swim before a drink on deck as the sun slips away. Only two evenings are there onboard meals, the rest of the time it’s time to explore under your own steam – and Croatian resorts are packed with reasonably priced little waterfront restaurants.
