The anti-itinerary safari

For decades, all-inclusive safaris have followed the same schedule. Pre-dawn wake-up calls. Game drives that leave on time whether you’re ready or not. Structured mealtimes. Planned downtime. Communal meals. It’s a structure most accept as part of the deal. But what if that’s not the way a safari is meant to be enjoyed? As a born and bred South African, the safari holiday isn’t once-in-a-lifetime for me. It’s something of a routine. An annual, or even more frequent, event. And to be honest I’d never really questioned its structure. But during a recent stay at an ultra-luxury private villa in South Africa’s Madikwe Game Reserve, I experienced something that felt fundamentally different from any safari I’d done before. It wasn’t just more exclusive or more indulgent, it was freer. Unscripted. Almost deliberately anti-safari in the way it dismantled everything I’d come to expect. A safari without a schedule Sure, at some of South Africa’s biggest game reserves, you can self-drive, self-cater and set your own safari schedule. But if you’re after the trimmings that the quintessential all-inclusive safari offers then you’re pretty much bound by a daily schedule that isn’t your own. In the past it was ideal, expected even,

How long do Chase Ultimate Rewards points take to transfer to partner programs?

Chase Ultimate Rewards points make an excellent foundation for an award traveler’s portfolio. Like other transferable loyalty currencies, these points can be redeemed for highly valuable awards through airline and hotel transfer partners. As with any transferable points program, an essential aspect of using Chase Ultimate Rewards points is knowing how long it takes to transfer them to whichever partner you want to utilize. Long transfer times make planning and booking awards more difficult, especially when availability is limited. American Express Membership Rewards offers some instant transfers, while Citi ThankYou Rewards transfers can take up to a week. Here’s what you can expect with transfer times for your Chase points. Related: Best credit cards Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer times We enlisted the help of numerous TPG teammates to determine the time it takes for Chase Ultimate Rewards points to transfer to partners. CHASE We gathered data points where staffers transferred points to their corresponding individual airline and hotel partner accounts over the last several months. We then tracked how long it took for them to show up. Here’s what we found: Program Transfer time Transfer ratio Aer Lingus AerClub Instantaneous 1:1 Air Canada Aeroplan Instantaneous 1:1 Air France-KLM Flying Blue

American Airlines passengers can now use AAdvantage miles for inflight purchases

Loyal American Airlines passengers will now be able to use their AAdvantage miles for inflight purchases on all flights, expanding the option across the carrier’s entire network. The new policy, which went into effect Tuesday, will allow travelers to redeem AAdvantage miles for inflight purchases on all regional flights, American Airlines confirmed to TPG. Previously, loyal travelers could only use their miles to purchase items on mainline flights. “We are continuously looking for ways to enhance the travel journey for our customers and are thrilled to expand this new enhancement to all flights,” American wrote in a statement shared with TPG. Points can be used to purchase alcoholic beverages (like beer, wine and liquor) on domestic flights over 250 miles and snacks on some flights over 1,100 miles, according to the airline. To use miles, travelers must ensure their AAdvantage number is attached to their reservation, and they must have their boarding pass ready when paying. The cost of items varies, but some examples are: Wine for $10 or 1,000 miles Bud Light, Dos Equis and Truly Hard Seltzer for $9 or 900 miles Goose IPA or Heineken for $10 or 1,000 miles A fruit-and-cheese plate for $11 or 1,100

Your car rental company has a ‘do not rent’ list. Here’s how to steer clear of it

Every car rental company has a “do not rent,” or DNR, list containing the names of former customers who are no longer allowed to rent vehicles with them. In fact, Hertz, Avis, Enterprise and others sometimes permanently ban even top-tier elite members in their loyalty program if they find the circumstances warrant it. I know this firsthand because, as a consumer advocate, banned car rental customers have flooded my helpline for years. Most of these travelers had no idea that some of their actions could lead to such severe and embarrassing outcomes. The outcast car rental customers all want the same thing when they contact me: to get off the DNR list. They hope to make amends and get back on the road with their favorite car rental companies. There is occasionally good news for some of these people, but only a small percentage. Unlike airlines and cruise lines, which tend to ban problematic passengers for life, car rental companies can sometimes be forgiving. However, the path off the DNR list depends entirely on how the traveler ends up on it in the first place. Here are the real-life experiences of a few car rental customers who found themselves banned,

Why am I considering Finnair Plus for premium cabin tickets

I’m always looking for the best ways to redeem my hard-earned points and miles, and with so many program changes and devaluations, it can be quite time-consuming. But Finnair Plus, Finnair’s loyalty program, recently caught my attention. In May 2024, the program adopted Avios, the same currency used by Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia and Qatar Airways. More than 90% of my redemptions are for premium cabin tickets, so finding sweet spots or programs with optimal rates is the best way to maximize my rewards. Here are some reasons why I’m considering Finnair Plus for future premium cabin redemptions. Ability to book airfare earlier than most Oneworld programs The best way to book award seats, especially for premium cabins, is to book as far in advance as possible. This translates into knowing when airlines open up award seats because even a few days can make the difference between snagging a premium seat in first or business class or missing out entirely. I usually travel with my family, so finding three tickets on the same flight is quite the challenge. Here’s a look at some Oneworld airline frequent flyer programs and approximately when they open their schedule for award tickets. Airline
