Save money on your next trip: Use these tips to never pay full price for a rental car

Road trip season is in full swing, but rental cars (like everything else) are no longer as affordable as they used to be. Plus, the initial price advertised can be misleading, as there are often hidden fees, damage waivers and other expenses to take into account. If you’re looking to cut costs on your upcoming car rental, you’ve come to the right place. This guide will provide all the tips and tricks you need to save money on your rental car. Related: The 12 best road trips to take with your family this summer Use a corporate, university or alumni code JEFFREY GREENBERG/UIG/GETTY IMAGES Using a corporate code from your job or university is one of the simplest ways to save on rental cars. It’s worth checking your corporate or alumni travel site or student benefits page for rental company discounts. Many universities have deals with Avis, Enterprise, Hertz and National that can save students and alumni significant money. Some codes may even offer additional benefits, such as free extra drivers or waived fees for drivers under 25. Always ensure you can use these codes on personal rentals, as some corporate codes are exclusively for business travel. Sometimes, your company

United Airlines adds Mexico’s Riviera Nayarit in 3-route winter expansion

United Airlines will offer travelers a new way to the Riviera Nayarit on Mexico’s Pacific coast this winter. The Star Alliance carrier will add Tepic International Airport (TPQ) to its map with a Saturday-only nonstop from Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) beginning Dec. 20. The flight — on an Embraer E175 — will operate through the winter. United is the first U.S. airline to fly to TPQ, which sits near the Riviera Nayarit coast, north of Puerto Vallarta. The airport does boast a nonstop to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Mexican budget airline Volaris, schedule data from aviation analytics firm Cirium shows. Bargain hunting: When is the best time to book flights for the cheapest airfare? Tepic is United’s second new destination in Mexico this year. The airline became the first U.S. carrier to Puerto Escondido International Airport (PXM) on Oaxacan coast when it began flights from Houston in April. American Airlines will join United in Puerto Escondido in December. In addition to Tepic, United will also add two new routes to Mexico and the Caribbean: Denver International Airport (DEN) to Mexico City International Airport (MEX) and Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) in the Dominican Republic on Oct.

Allegiant Air eyeing Wi-Fi for its planes, ‘studying’ premium seats

Budget airlines aren’t generally known for having the latest tech and entertainment options on board their planes. But Allegiant Air thinks there’s one thing it can’t wait on much longer: inflight Wi-Fi. Allegiant anticipates adding onboard internet in the not-too-distant future, the carrier’s top executive confirmed this week: “That is the expectation,” CEO Greg Anderson told TPG. The carrier already had initial conversations, Anderson said, about outfitting its existing Airbus planes with Starlink Wi-Fi — the same high-speed service that United Airlines is currently in the process of installing across its fleet. Bargain hunting: When is the best time to book flights for the cheapest airfare? While those talks haven’t yet led to a deal, adding Wi-Fi — in some form — is on the carrier’s mind at a time when passengers increasingly expect to be connected while they’re in the air. “I think it’s table stakes, at this point — or, it will be. It’s important,” Anderson said, speaking to TPG in an exclusive interview this week at the carrier’s Las Vegas headquarters. Inflight Wi-Fi is front and center The U.S. airline industry has seen both network and budget carriers install and improve Wi-Fi service in recent years, including

Global Entry vs. TSA PreCheck: Which is more beneficial?

When navigating U.S. airport security, there’s no better way (in our humble opinion) to expedite your trip than by being both a Clear and TSA PreCheck user. A third program, Global Entry, completes the trifecta for speeding your way through airport lines. You might ask yourself whether it’s necessary to have TSA PreCheck and Global Entry, let alone all three. We are here to tell you that they are worth the investment — but let’s take a closer look at these programs so you can decide which is best for you. What is TSA PreCheck? JOE RAEDLE/GETTY IMAGES TSA PreCheck is an expedited security program run by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration, allowing preapproved, low-risk travelers to pass through a dedicated TSA PreCheck security line without taking off their belt and light jacket or removing their laptop and liquids from their bag. TSA PreCheck users are also usually screened with a traditional metal detector. Although TSA PreCheck screening is separate from non-TSA PreCheck screening, sometimes a dedicated TSA PreCheck screening line isn’t available. In this case, you’ll need to use the standard TSA lane. However, even when using the regular security lane, you won’t need to remove the aforementioned items.
