January 9, 2024

West Virginia is an oasis of outdoor adventure, even during the winter months. Shake off the winter blues and escape to Almost Heaven for unique and epic adventures that are sure to bring a smile to your face. From romantic carriage rides and family sledding to daring walks and underground exploration, there’s a one-of-a-kind adventure here for everyone.

Horse Drawn Carriage Ride

Find yourself in the scene of a holiday movie when galloping through freshly fallen snow, bundled up in a horse-drawn sleigh. Hear the sleigh bells echoing off the mountains of Almost Heaven on your glorious ride, offered at both Snowshoe Mountain and The Greenbrier. Perfect for a family activity or romantic date night, time spent amongst West Virginia’s breathtaking scenery always makes for an unforgettable time.

Sled Run

Catch serious downhill speed with little to no experience required at the Sled Run within Blackwater Falls State Park, the longest sled run on the East Coast! Glide down nearly a half mile of fresh mountain snow and be transported back to the top via a conveyor belt for ease. Sessions are available in two-hour blocks and tickets can be purchased over the phone or online.

Adventure Dining Tour

Visit Snowshoe Mountain for one of the most unique activities of the season. Begin your expedition by hopping into a 4-seater RZR and hitting the Cheat Mountain Ridge Trail that journeys below towering Spruce forests. End your trip at the Backcountry Hut, where a made-from-scratch, 3-course meal will be awaiting you. Choose between a lunch or dinner trip, but be sure to book fast before all spots are filled!

Caverns

Tired of being stuck inside all winter? Visit West Virginia for a mysterious cave exploration. Venture thousands of feet below the earth’s surface into the intricate systems of caves and caverns overflowing with hidden gems. Find a vast wonderland full of stalactites and stalagmites at Lost World Caverns in Lewisburg. Browse the museum onsite and learn about the Tyrannosaurus Rex, Triceratops and prehistoric cave bears whose remains were discovered within the cavern in 1967. Take a trip to Smoke Hole Caverns, first used by Seneca Native Americans. Today the area has expanded into a resort featuring a boutique store, mini golf course, gemstone mining, fishing, on-site lodging and more.

Bridge Walk

Take the walk of your life this winter with a Bridge Walk tour. Stroll the structural beams that lie right under the famous New River Gorge Bridge, over 800 feet up in the air. Witness exceptional sights of the snow-covered gorge below. Tours are available throughout the entire month of December and last approximately 3 hours. While here, be sure to extend your stay to explore the nation’s newest national park.
