February 5, 2024

Impressing your significant other on Valentine’s Day is made easy in Almost Heaven. Whether you want to get outside in nature or explore a mountain town, you will be pleasantly surprised by West Virginia’s ways to add unexpected romance to your special day.

Make Valentine’s Day complete by treating you and your love to these exclusively West Virginian experiences.

Chase Chilly Cascades

For a backdrop that perfectly suits a romance film, consider taking your lover to a beautiful waterfall in Almost Heaven. Cathedral Falls in Gauley Bridge is a winter wonderland with its majestic 60-foot drop and surrounding shale cliffs. With quick and easy access from Route 60, this waterfall only requires a brief walk from the nearby parking lot. Follow the short roadside path to get a close view of the dramatic drop.

The 57-foot Blackwater Falls in Davis is famous for its tannic acid-tinted water, which is stained by fallen hemlock and red spruce needles. The steady roar of rushing water makes for a relaxing background sound while you and your special someone savor the moment from the walkway overlook.

For a front-row seat of some beautiful cascades, go to Valley Falls in Fairmont. This section of the Tygart Valley River has a 10-foot drop where waters intertwine between angular rock faces, which results in bubbly white waters in some sections. With plenty of flat rock sections to stand on, you will find endless viewing points of these small falls.

Explorer Tip: For a chance to win exclusive West Virginia prizes, check into each waterfall as they are all on the West Virginia Waterfall Trail! You will also find an Almost Heaven swing at Blackwater Falls State Park, so be sure to share your Valentine’s Day moment using #AlmostHeaven.

Grab a Couple of Coffees

If your significant other’s love language is caffeine, then you’re in luck. There is no shortage of charming cafes in Almost Heaven, including TipTop Coffee in Thomas. This little coffee shop serves up roasted coffee and cold brews as well as tea, fine wines, bean-to-bar chocolates and homemade pepperoni rolls. Ripley in Mountaineer Country is home to The Grind, which is a must-visit when you’re in the area. Treat your date and yourself to some spectacular, fresh, hot and cold brew coffee. If you’re feeling more adventurous, specialty teas, Liege waffles, bagels, flatbreads, and more are also great additions to your cup of joe.

Battle Grounds Bakery & Cafe in historic Harpers Ferry offers delicious drinks and tasty treats. If you’re looking to venture out on your Valentine’s Day brew, try a specialty latte flavor like Banana Split or Almond Joy.

A Trail for Two

A hiking adventure in weather suited for snowshoes or just traditional hiking boots, is sure to bring out your inner romance. Whether you’re hoping for some snow or just want to go with the flow, you and your date will be blown away by Lindy Point Trail near Blackwater Falls in Davis. This easy, 0.7-mile out-and-back trail boasts beautiful scenery along the way and reveals a stunning view of the rolling mountains at the trailhead.

For an easy hike that’s just outside the city buzz of Charleston, Sunrise Carriage Trail is a historic path that winds through a shady, wooded section. Enjoy 1.4 miles out and back, and once you reach the top, you will uncover a beautiful view of the city from the overlook.

Shop Local

Who says you can’t go out shopping on Valentine’s Day? In West Virginia, there are plenty of local shops that make this a unique experience. Capitol Market in Charleston is located in a renovated freight station from the 19th century with many indoor specialty shops. Expect many vendors selling locally-ground coffee, baked goods, exotic cheese and wines, produce, meats and much more. For the occasion, it’s only fitting to grab some artisan chocolates for your date!

Beckley is known for its coal heritage, and you can get a sense of that and more when you walk into Tamarack Marketplace. West Virginia’s premier artisan market, this is the cultural hub of Southern West Virginia as it sells local food, pottery, art, home goods and much more. Keep an eye out for seasonal indoor events. If you’re exploring Fayetteville, Lost Appalachia should definitely be on your list of shops to go. This little shop has a plethora of West Virginia-themed merch, stickers, decals, outdoor and home accessories and much more.

A Romantic Dinner

Nothing wraps up your romantic day quite like a gourmet dinner that you don’t have to prepare yourself. Lot 12 Public House in Berkeley Springs serves up some savory, seasonal comfort cuisine by local Chef Damian Heath. Situated in a circa 1913 renovated home, relax in an intimate dining room and a small eclectic bar that creates the perfect backdrop for a date night dinner. Valentine’s Day is the perfect excuse to splurge on fine choices like the Crisp Roasted Duck, Grilled Filet Mignon and gourmet desserts.

1010 Bridge Restaurant in Charleston showcases its Appalachian roots. Owned by 2023 James Beard Award Finalist and West Virginia Chef Ambassador Chef Paul Smith, 1010 uses farm-fresh ingredients that result in delicious dishes like the Heritage Pork Chop, Braised Beef Bolognese and much more. Muriele’s Italian Kitchen in Fairmont is another premium dinner option. Enjoy their signature pasta dinners, fresh bread, salads, paninis and all things Italian cuisine.
