Is Iceland safe to drive yourself?

The car rental counter at Keflavík Airport is always busy. Visitors collect their keys, load up on insurance options they half-understand, and drive into a landscape that looks, from the terminal window, like it should be easy. Wide roads, no traffic, open sky. Forty minutes later, somewhere on a coastal highway, the wind picks up. Not a gentle breeze — a sideways force that pushes the car half a lane over. The weather app still says partly cloudy. The sky disagrees. And somewhere ahead, a single-lane bridge appears with no warning, and another car is already on it. This is Iceland. It is absolutely safe to drive — but it is nothing like driving anywhere else you have been. The honest answer: Yes, but… Let’s get this out of the way: Iceland is not a dangerous country to drive in. The roads are well-maintained, the infrastructure is modern, crime is virtually nonexistent, and Icelanders are calm, courteous drivers. If you have experience driving in varied conditions and you do your homework, self-driving is perfectly viable. But Iceland’s challenges have nothing to do with the roads and everything to do with what happens above and around them. The weather is the

First look: Andaz Miami Beach brings oceanfront elegance, a hydraulic pool and local flavor to Collins Avenue

[circuit type=review circuit_id=”20420194664″] Editor’s note: The Andaz Miami Beach provided TPG with a complimentary two-night stay so that we could get an inside look at the hotel and its amenities. The opinions expressed below are entirely those of the author and weren’t subject to review by the hotel or any external entity. Steps from the ocean and just north of South Beach’s buzz, the 287-room Andaz Miami Beach quietly soft-launched in May. Blending the city’s iconic art deco style with breezy modernism, this Hyatt property offers a fresh, design-forward alternative for locals and visitors. Formerly The Confidante, the hotel has seen several identities since the 1940s, but the latest $60 million transformation marks its debut as Florida’s first Andaz. The interiors are unrecognizable, but the building’s baby-blue exterior stripe and rooftop radio tower remain. As a Category 6 Hyatt, it starts at 21,000 points or around $350 (introductory rate) per night. GISELLE GOMEZ/THE POINTS GUY Let’s take a peek inside one of our most exciting hotel openings of the year. First impressions Whether arriving by car, foot or bike, guests are greeted by valet staff who whisk away luggage and escort them to the second-floor lobby via private elevator or

New data confirms airlines charging more for solo passengers — but it’s not as bad as you’ve heard

Airlines make all kinds of interesting pricing decisions in order to maximize profits in an industry where it’s very hard to make money from flying. Charging more for last-minute bookings and dynamically pricing seats based on demand are among the many ways airlines price flights … and squeeze more money from consumers. Historically, airlines also frequently charged more for fares that didn’t include a weekend or at least a Saturday stopover. That trend has eased over the years, but the goal for airlines remains the same when it comes to prices: Try to wring more money from business travelers who often have deeper pockets (or, at least, expense accounts). Airlines are getting more sophisticated at extracting money from leisure travelers, too. Consumers have seemingly been more willing to spend more in recent years, especially on premium products like extra-legroom or first-class seats. After all, Delta Air Lines said it is selling more than three-quarters of its first-class seats. Now, there is a relatively new trend at the forefront: Some airlines are charging more for solo passengers than those booking multiple seats. It’s a trend Thrifty Traveler first discovered last month. We found similar instances in our own reporting earlier this
